FREE WILL? AT WHAT EXPENSE?

Cognitive science fascinates me
What does it mean for a "Will" to be free?
Why would that matter I ask you with glee?
Read on, I urge you, perhaps you will see.
Nature or nuture, hard-wired or plastic?
What is our mind? What makes it fantastic?
We make up our memories, now that's a good trick,
We make up our moods, both the happy and sick.
And so slowly construct the who that we are?
While physics constrains, since our skull is a jar.
Just what makes us think in our lives we're the star?

There's nothing more costly than "Will" that is free.
To have it and hold it consumes energy,
And limits our neurons and dendritic tree,
And makes us much less than whoever we be.

So much is unconscious.
So much is innate,
Yet we're unaware of how much is fate
While confabulating, our left hemisphere
Gives the belief that we're whole and we're here.
Like magic illusions we selectively see
And ultimately choose just who we want to be.
And for that we must take responsibility.

The mind and the brain are related by birth
But are often at odds with our world and our worth.
Memories are encoded, not that they're all real,
And selectively chosen to fit what we feel
And often we choose to revise a great deal
Of our sensory memory, the part that we feel.

When we make choices, so labeled "Free will"
It's amazingly simple to judiciously kill
The things we have done that do not fit our bill.
For more than what's true we each have a story
That we nurture and carve from diapers til hoary
That will take us through space and and take us through time
While filtering out the gore and the grime
Creating for us our identity
The one that we fondly refer to as "me?.

There's nothing more costly than "Will" that is free.
To have it and hold it consumes energy,
And limits our neurons and dendritic tree,
And makes us just less than whoever we be.

So think you make choices, your energy's used
Creating illusions so your world's not confused
That you are continuous,
You're someone you see, quite distinct and apart from the one you forgot
As others convince you what you are they're not.

So next time a decision comes up for a choice, just say "I prefer not"
Give your self a new voice, and active or passive you will make a choice
For "Free Will" is as programmed as the sound of your voice
Just enjoy the conceit that the you that decided
Was not as hard-wired as the act that transpired.

There's nothing more costly than "Will" that is free.
To have it and hold it consumes energy,
And limits our neurons and dendritic tree,
And makes us just less than whoever we be.

Free will as illusion, well it's all the rage
Surrender, explore and you're back in your cage.
A condition you'll fight no matter your age.
But the brain goes on braining, and you're center stage!
